Michael J. Rutka, a father of two young girls and husband to Marcella, was killed by a passing automobile on
August 6, 1999 while training for the Twin Cities Marathon as a qualifier for Boston. Rutka was a Senior Vice President at
Doner Advertising, creative writer, and "the best friend I ever had" according to the 12 men who read eulogies for him.
Michael was a friend to everyone. He made everyone feel very important and never let on about his own importance.
According to Race Director Kathleen Gina, "He was my running buddy and taught me how to love life and to be free to be
who ever I wanted to be."
The "caricatures" that were created for the event represent Rutka’s ability to express himself without fear of being
ridiculed. Michael lived more in his short life of 46 years than most people do in 70 years.
While Rutka was living he gave generously every year to the charities of his choice. In memory of his kindness - "run
like mike" Rutka 5K continues the annual gift giving by donating a large portion of the event proceeds to charity.
The Ann Arbor Track Club invites you to join us in the celebration of Rutka’s life in this fun filled event.
